After their hard-won victory at Vimy Ridge in 1917, Canada’s soldiers won the admiration of the world. From then onward the Canadians were the “shock troops” that led the way to victory in one battle after another. They fought in mud, barbed wire and shell holes while menaced by snipers and poison gas on the bloody battlefields of Hill 70, Passchendaele, Amiens and Cambrai.
At Passchendaele alone, 15,064 Canadians were left dead or wounded. But in the face of dreadful odds, Canada’s soldiers proved themselves again and again. The conflict cost a young nation dearly, yet many believe that it was in this fiery crucible that modern Canada was born.
