Joseph Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-George, was one of the most famous men in 18th century France. Born to a slave mother and a wealthy French father on the island of Guadeloupe, he was taken to Paris as a young boy. There he excelled at every endeavour – becoming a champion swordsman, violin virtuoso, composer, and later, a military commander during the French Revolution. Illustrated with original and archival paintings the book also features sidebars and timelines that highlight such figures as Marie Antoinette, Franz-Josef Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Today the music of the man known as ‘le Mozart noir’ is being rediscovered and his inspiring story lives on.
